SharePoint 2010 - An unhandled exception occurred in the Silverlight Application

After a long hiatus, I'm back!

OK: Surprised by a problem with an existing site that's been under use for quite some time. On attempt to create a site (or pretty much anything), the site returned a blank page with:

An unhandled exception occurred in the Silverlight Application

A quick search turned up the answer here (thanks 'magge2'):

http://msfarmer.blogspot.com/2010/12/unhandled-exception-occurred-in.html

In short, the Web Application General Settings had 'Web Page Security Validation' turned off. Turning this On (in Central Administration) fixes the issue.

The weird part - it appears that no one actually changed this setting so what gives? After some head scratching, I cannot say for sure - either someone changed it (and either doesn't remember or want to admit it) or the latest Cumulative Update turned it off.

Either way, be forewarned!

Hi David, I had the same problem what is weird is that it keeps turning it off. I don´t what is doing. But it´s been 2 months now and I got this problem back a few times again. Since you were not sure who turned it off, I was wondering if by any chance it turned off again on your environment. I appreciate any help.

I've not seen it turn off once it was turned on but it is off by default. If you create a new application you have to make sure it is set. By default, most of SP won't complain either way.

It could potentially have to do with some custom code - often it is necessary to disable this temporarily and many folks forget to turn it back on.

Do you have any code that might be doing this?
