SharePoint Search Center missing controls

Soonor or later you will come across this issue - you have a custom styled master page, apply it to the site and all is well. You decide to use the Enterprise Search Center and viola - no search controls!

There are a number of articles on this but found one of particular use:

While his solution is great, I usually have to add a custom style to fix the left side of the page:

  #s4-leftpanel {
   display: none !important;
  }

  #MSO_ContentTable {
   margin-left: 0 !important;
  }
This prevents the page from displaying a little box on the left (where the QuickLaunch would be).
